Acupuncture for Fertility
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has defined infertility as falling into 3 different categories
- inability to conceive
- inability to maintain a pregnancy
- inability to carry a pregnancy to a live birth.
Analytics by the WHO has stated that 1.9% of women aged 20 to 44 in the worldwide population experience infertility. There is another 10.5% of women who experience sub-infertility after having a child. This means one in four couples will experience some form of infertility.
IVF is the only scientific approach to facilitating a pregnancy. The emotional and health impact from the effect of the fertility drugs are hard to describe. The reproductive system and constitution of a women is full of complexity and the the medical model is symptomatic treatment of infertility. The philosophy in acupuncture is to treat the human body as a whole taking account the physical body and symptoms, and the patient’s mind and emotions.
Acupuncture can work positively in assisting conception. It has been shown to increases the rate of pregnancy. IVF specialists are aware of the combined approach in using acupuncture to enhancing their success rate. These in turn has increased the inquisitiveness of medical practitioners to research the effect of acupuncture on IVF and several studies have investigated the potential of acupuncture improving the outcome of IVF:

I first went to Elaine for acupuncture in January 2013. I wasn’t in a great place following 2 unsuccessful ivf treatments and 2 unsuccessful iui treatments which had taken place from March to December 2012. After a year and a half of trying to conceive, resulting in 3 miscarriages I decided I needed to restore some balance to my body. After an initial chat with Elaine I felt she had a holistic approach to her clients care. There was no hard sell and I felt I could try the treatment and then see if it was for me.
